It seems the old adage is true: Use it or lose it. Clinical research has shown that keeping your mind active can delay the effect of Alzheimer's disease - and what’s more, playing a game of bingo (a favourite with seniors) is a great way to keep the wheels and cogs turning.
Around one million people in Britain suffer the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's disease, for example, but these studies suggest that keeping the mind active can reduce the deterioration by one month for every year the mind is kept occupied. The benefits of concentrating, combined with the social aspects of playing bingo, make this a valuable occupation for those in their senior years.
The growing number of smoking bans in public areas – though controversial in many regards – has also made bingo halls a much healthier place to frequent, adding to the health benefits provided by simply playing a few games of bingo. It's suggested that people of all ages take advantage of the mental and social exercise provided by the game.
Many people also feel that if bingo halls garnered more support the government could save on other less effective treatments. The end result would be a win-win situation for everyone.
