Bingo Proceeds Send Kids to College

The Myrtle Beach Elks Lodge 1771 is the site of a weekly Wednesday night bingo fundraiser aimed at collecting scholarship money for deserving high school students in Horry County. Fittingly enough, in its formative years bingo games were used as a fundraising tool for churches.

Ron Campus, the Myrtle Beach Elks' chairman of bingo, says that they’re probably the predominant scholarship source for kids in Horry County, awarding scholarships totaling $13,000 to $15,000 annually.

Scholarship applicants are evaluated on a strict formula set by the national Elks organization. They are accessed on a point system which considers academics, extracurricular activities in school and the community, an essay and financial need. Home-schooled students can also qualify.

Granted they continue to do well in their studies, successful candidates will receive $3,500 over a four-year period.

Hundreds of similar bingo programs run around the country. They’re not only an essential part of giving students the opportunity to continue their studies after high-school, but they also help build and strengthen community spirit.
