Greektown Hotel And Casino Thrives

The economic crisis has not hurt Detroit's Greektown Hotel and Casino, which thrives in spite of struggling industry.

Things are looking up for Greektown Casino Hotel – especially considering the recent bout of trouble the venue has endured, including financial problems that resulted in the casino being put up for sale. Still, and perhaps remarkably, all the snags have not adversely affected the casino's business.

In fact, during the month of May, Greektown Hotel and Casino was the only one of the three Detroit casinos that had a revenue increase over the same month in the previous year. Their revenue actually went up by 7.2% in that month.

Amanda Totaro, the VP of Marketing for Greektown, said, "We're giving our guests the most for their money-on the casino floor, in the hotel, and at our food and beverage outlets. Each and every month Greektown is filled with great promotions."

Conversely, the other two Detroit casinos did not do as well. MGM Grand Detroit experienced a drop in revenue of 10.9%. MotorCity Casino Hotel's revenue dropped 3.6%. The overall revenue decrease for the city's casinos was 4.25%.

Still, even though Greektown is pleased with the May numbers, they are not bringing in as much revenue dollars as the other two casinos. MGM Grand reports a revenue of $47.2 million in May and MotorCity was at $40.5 million. Greektown reported a May revenue of $30.2.

The just-over-4% decrease was minimal compared to what some casinos in other states are experiencing, however. In Atlantic City, revenue has dropped over twenty percent in recent months, and Las Vegas casinos have also seen their revenue drop drastically.
