Monaco's Monte Carlo district is a popular tourist destination known throughout the world for its gambling and glamour. This reputation is in no small part due to the gorgeous Monte Carlo Casino, which was built in 1878 by Charles Garnier - the same architect who designed the opera house in Paris.
The casino is located in the heart of Monaco, so it's in close proximity to amenities. The building is notable for its "atrium", a gorgeous space paved in marble and surrounded by 28 Ionic columns in onyx. Visits can follow it into the "Salle Garnier" - the auditorium of the opera. This space is ornately decorated in red and gold, with detailed bas-reliefs, frescoes and sculptures. The Salle Garnier has been home to outstanding international performances of opera, ballet and concerts for more than a century.
There are numerous gaming rooms featuring stained glass windows, breath-taking decorations and sculptures, allegorical paintings and bronze lamps. The Monte Carlo offers all the classic casino games, like European and American Roulette, slots, Craps, various forms of poker, Blackjack and Chemin de Fer. The main gambling area is comprised of two rooms: the American Room (open from 10am for slot machines) and the European Room (open at 12noon for Roulette, Baccarat and Chemin-de-Fer). There are Prive Salons available to high-stake players for late night private games.
All visitors must adhere to the dress code. In the gaming rooms, sensible dress is required, which means no shorts and no flip flops are allowed. In the private rooms, after 8pm daily, a jacket is required and no sport shoes will be allowed. In addition to these stipulations, military or religious uniforms are prohibited. Also note that all visitors must be over 18 years of age.
