Hundreds Out of Work at Vernon Downs Casino
Jeff Gural, the primary owner of Vernon Downs Racetrack and Casino in Vernon, NY is effectively putting 300 out of work with his decision to close the casino portion of the operation. The closure is scheduled to take effect Monday, February 11 at 1pm.
This decision comes as the result of the hesitance of state Legislature to pass a bill that would give the state's eight race track casinos more money.
It’s Gural’s hope that the shutdown will force the state to take action. The Vernon Downs casino generates about $560,000 a week in revenues, half of which goes directly to education.
In the meantime, hundreds of people are out of work.
