Poker Tournament World: Aussie Millions

Media Room > Poker World > Tournament News

The Crown Australian Poker Championship, or "Aussie Millions" is the biggest poker tournament in the southern hemisphere. The tournament is held annually at the Crown Casino complex in Melbourne, Australia. Crown Casino is the largest casino and poker room in Australia.

Today the Aussie Millions is the largest poker tournament in the southern hemisphere, attracting an impressive spread of poker professionals and hopefuls from around the globe. This event skipped the humble beginnings of many poker series and was sent straight to success. In June 1997 the Crown Casino introduced Poker at the Crown and then a little over a year later, the Australian Poker Championship was held. The main event was a $1,000 buy-in Limit Hold'em tournament that attracted 74 entries with a $74,000 prize pool. This was the first major championship

The Crown Australian Poker Championship soon became known as the "Aussie Millions" began being held in January. By 2001 the event attracted 40 entrants with a $5,000 buy in for a prize pool of $200,000. At this point the tournament series was still attracting primarily Australians to the tables but since then, the event has gone very international. By 2003 the Aussie Millions had 122 entrants and a $1.2m prize pool.

In January 2005, the Aussie Millions boasted 263 participants, over half of who were from overseas including players from New Zealand, England, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, USA, Sweden, Holland, Canada, Italy and Lebanon. Each participant paid $10,000 to enter the No Limit Hold'em main event, which generated $2,630,000 - the biggest prize pool ever in the southern hemisphere.

Today many of the biggest poker stars and celebrities in the world play in this event, including Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson, Phil Ivey, Jennifer Tilly, James Woods, Mike Sexton, Phil Laak and Shannon Elizabeth.
