Poker Dictionary: Poker Words Beginning With B

Baby

a low ranked card.

Although a Baby can be cute, they are not typically welcome in a poker hand.

Baby Flush

a flush made from using low cards. For example, you have a three of hearts and the board has a four of hearts.

A Baby Flush can be a big surprise to players who overlooked the low cards.

Back Door

Making a hand that was not intended by the player.

I was hoping for the straight, but ended up hitting the Back Door flush.

Bad Beat

A good hand that is expected to win. However, it is still beat by a better hand.

When your Q,Q,Q,A,A full house gets beat by a A,A,A,Q,Q full house, that's a Bad Beat .

Big Blind

The fixed amount of money that is played by the player sitting in the second position, clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt.

Big Blind can be good, because it may force you to play that low winning hand you would have folded otherwise.

Big Pair

A pair of cards with a rank value over ten.

If your pair is over ten, feel free to call it a Big Pair .

Blind

The bet(s) that must be made by the two players sitting directly to the dealer's left. This bet(s) start the action on the first round of betting. The blinds are designated before any cards are dealt.

A Blind can seem like a pain in the behind, but they start the pot, and keep the game moving.

Blind Bet

A bet that is made without looking at your cards.

A Blind Bet is a very brave move to make. Not always your best bet.

Bluff

To lead others to believe that you have a better hand than they do, by betting or raising when you know you do not have the best hand.

If a player can make you think he or she has pocket A's when they really have 3,7 off-suit, they have completed a successful Bluff .

Board

The cards which are visible to all players.

All a player can hope is that the cards on the Board help the cards in their hand.

Boat

A poker hand that consists of three cards of the same rank and another two cards of a different rank. This hand is commonly called a Full House.

There are only a few hands that can sink a Boat.

Bottom Pair

When a player uses the lowest card in the flop to make a pair with their lowest card.

I wish you luck with your Bottom Pair , because any other pair on the board will beat yours.

Bounty

The amount of money that is awarded to a player when he wins over another player.

Not unlike the old days when a bounty was placed on someone's head, except this Bounty takes place in a poker game.

Brick & Mortar (B&M)

An actual card room, as opposed to an online poker room.

The Bellagio, MGM, and Caesar's Palace are all Brick & Mortar card rooms.

Bring-In

A forced bet that occurs before any other betting. The chosen player opens betting by some small amount. He or she is chosen by the value of cards dealt face up on the initial deal.

A Bring-In means that a player must bring-out his/her wallet in order to play.

Bubble

When a player places outside of the money in a tournament, not winning any thing. This is also referred to as “getting bubbled”.

The goal is to place inside the bubble .

Bug

A wild card that can be used to make straights and flushes, and can be otherwise played as an ace.

A Bug can add a whole new dimension to the average poker game.

Bump

To raise.

“I would like to Bump the bet to $100.”

Burn

To get rid of the top card before dealing out the cards. The card is dealt face down. This is done to protect players against marked cards. This is also referred to as “burning a card”.

The dealer must Burn cards in order to prevent cheating.

Bust

To lose all of your money (or chips). In turn, you are eliminated from the game.

The last thing a player wants to do in a poker game is Bust .

Button

A token that is used to mark the spot of the dealer.

The Button is good position, because it is the last position to act.

Buy

To make a large bet with the aim of discouraging other players.

Often, players will try to Buy the pot by bidding high to scare away other players.

Buy-In

The minimum amount of money that is required for a player to participate in a Poker game.

If the Buy-In is set at $20, each player must pay $20 in order to play.
