Pat

Not to draw any cards in a draw card game.

“Nathan decided to stand Pat in the draw card game.”

Pay-Off

To call on the final round of betting when you do not know if you have the best hand.

“I called on the final round of betting, because I was unsure about my hand – that was the Pay-Off .”

Play the Board

In a game of Hold'em when a player's cards don't make a hand any better than what is shown on the board.

To Play the Board, usually not a good thing.

Poker Face

A term used for a facial expression showing no emotion or changes in emotion.

An excellent Poker Face is an important tool in Texas Hold'em.

Pocket Cards

The two cards that each player is dealt at the beginning of a hold'em game. Only the player who the cards are dealt to gets to see them.

Pocket Cards

are only seen by the individual players.

Position

Where a player is seated in relation to the seat of the dealer.

Darcy was seated in the second Position from the dealer.

Post

To place your chips in the pot.

When you Post, you should place your chips gently.

Pot

The money or chips in the center of the table that each player is trying to win.

“I need to win a big Pot, or I'm going home.”

Pot-Committed

You are forced to call the rest of your stack because of the size of the pot and your remaining chips.

“Alice knew she likely wouldn't win, but she was Pot-Committed. ”

Pot-Limit

A version of poker where the maximum bet can equal the pot.

In Pot-Limit, the maximum bet can only be as high as the pot.

Pot Odds

The amount of money in the pot, compared to the amount you must put in the pot to continue playing that hand.

A player's Pot Odds depend on the amount in the pot and the amount you must put in the pot to continue the game.

Preflop

The portion of the game that happens before the flop.

“I could only see my pocket cards during the Preflop .”

Premium hand

A very strong hand.

“Pocket aces are a premium hand

Price

The pot odds you are getting for a draw or a call.

When deciding to draw or call, a player must look at the Price.

Proposition Players or Prop Players

An employee of a casino or gaming establishment whose purpose is to simply play poker, with the intent of keeping players at a table.

Prop Players exist at many B & M establishments.

Protect

(1.) To keep your cards concealed.

(2.) To invest more money in a pot so blind money that you've already put in isn't wasted.

“A player should try to Protect his or her cards.”

Put Down

To fold.

“Dino had pocket twos, which he decided to Put Down .”
