When you’re new to the game of Poker, it seems like the world is your oyster. There are so many games and variations of games to try that it seems like you may never get bored. However, you may want to think a little bit about your choice of game while you’re learning so that you can maximize both the amount of money you’re winning and the amount of fun you can have.
Beginners really should try and learn one game at a time so that they can understand the basics before moving on. However, this doesn’t mean you should restrict yourself to one variation of poker. So, while you shouldn’t restrict yourself to specifically No-Limit Hold’em cash games to begin with, you might want to stick with Hold’em until you really understand it before trying something like Omaha, or Stud. Remember that as a beginner, you don’t know what your “best game” will be, and it may take some time to figure it out. So make sure to experiment with different kinds of poker with your time playing.
You should stick to tournaments as a beginner, for a few reasons. Tournaments will protect you while you’re playing because of the buy-in. You can only lose as much as the buy-in. Also, decisions tend to be a bit easier in tournaments. You have fewer chips in front of you, so you can only do a certain amount of things. This also means that your more experienced opponents have less of an edge.
The idea is to keep experimenting. Make sure to try a few different games, then, when you have a handle on which game you prefer and are good at, get stuck in. At that point, it’s your opportunity to delve into the intricacies of your game and begin to really make some money!
